L-theanine — calm focus without the crash

L-theanine is an amino acid found naturally in green tea. It promotes a relaxed-but-alert state by increasing alpha brain-wave activity, and famously smooths the spike-and-crash of caffeine. The validated dose is 100–200 mg, ideally as the patented Suntheanine®.

What L-theanine does

L-theanine raises GABA, serotonin and dopamine while increasing alpha-wave EEG activity associated with calm, focused attention (Nobre et al., 2008). When combined with caffeine, it improves accuracy and attention-switching while reducing jitter and post-caffeine fatigue (Owen et al., 2008).

The caffeine pairing

A 2:1 ratio of L-theanine to caffeine (e.g. 200 mg L-theanine + 100 mg caffeine) is the most replicated combination in cognitive trials. For SA users on a 200 mg-caffeine morning routine, pair with 200–400 mg L-theanine.

Why Suntheanine®

L-theanine has two enantiomers (L and D). Only the L-form is bioactive. Cheap supplements often supply a racemic mix, halving the effective dose. Suntheanine® is enzymatically produced 99%+ pure L-theanine, used in the majority of published trials. Vivid uses Suntheanine.

L-theanine FAQ

Is L-theanine a sedative?

No — it produces a calm, alert state, not drowsiness. Most users can take it during the workday without sleepiness.

Can I take it with coffee?

Yes, and that's the most-studied pairing. A 2:1 L-theanine:caffeine ratio reduces caffeine jitter and improves attention.

What's the right dose?

100–200 mg for daytime calm focus; 200–400 mg paired with caffeine; 400 mg in the evening for wind-down.

Does it interact with medication?

Speak to your doctor if you take blood-pressure medication (mild additive lowering) or sedatives.

Is it safe in pregnancy?

Limited data — consult your healthcare provider.
